Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, addressed the Legislative House, confirming there is no shortage of food grains in the Keran and Jamgund areas of Kupwara district. This statement came in response to MLA Mir Saifullah‘s Calling Attention Motion, wherein he expressed concerns about the non-availability of essential food grains in these remote regions.
The MLA underlined the challenges faced by residents, particularly noting that Keran and Jamgund remain cut off for nearly six months during winter due to heavy snowfall, often leading to significant shortages of essential commodities. Such disruptions pose difficulties for families relying on consistent food supply.
Responding to these concerns, Minister Sharma provided reassurance about the government’s proactive measures. He stated the government guarantees the advance dumping and supply of food grains under various schemes for an eight-month period, from November to June, to ensure that these inaccessible and border areas receive adequate resources before winter onset or road access issues arise.
To validate his claims, the Minister presented specific data regarding the food grain supply. For Jamgund, he noted that there is a requirement of 536.14 quintals of food grains for the period from November 2025 to June 2026, and confirmed that 100% of this quantity has already been delivered. This figure illustrates the government’s effective management in ensuring food security in the region.
Similarly, concerning Keran, where the requisite quantity is 2774.43 quintals, the government has successfully transported 800 quintals, with an additional 346.80 quintals set aside in advance at designated locations for further distribution.
Minister Sharma assured the members that the remaining quantity of food grains for Keran would also be delivered and stocked by or before October 31, 2025. He emphasized, “The government is committed to ensuring an uninterrupted food supply to all remote and border regions of Jammu and Kashmir,” highlighting a strong focus on food security in these frequently isolated areas.
