Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, shivered through the coldest night of the season as temperatures plummeted to -2.1°C on November 15, 2023. This frosty turn marks the beginning of harsh winter weather in the region, according to the Meteorological (MeT) Department.
This significant drop in temperature aligns with reports indicating that Pahalgam experienced even lower mercury readings, settling at -3.8°C, making it the coldest location in the Kashmir Valley.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of MeT, stated that the forecast indicates no significant wet weather for the upcoming week, with night temperatures expected to remain steady until November 17. He noted a potential chance for a slight rise in temperatures for a short period following that date.
As the temperature dipped below freezing, areas within Srinagar and various parts of the Valley saw early morning frost, signaling an early onset of winter conditions. The combination of falling temperatures and frost serves as a reminder for residents to prepare for the demanding months ahead.
Experts suggest that public awareness can improve responses to cold weather, especially in vulnerable areas. Local authorities have advised residents to take precautions to mitigate health risks associated with extreme cold.
