Chief Minister Omar Abdullah officially inaugurated the Gulmarg Convention Centre today, aiming to transform it into Asia’s premier hub for global conferences. This ambitious vision seeks to position Gulmarg on par with renowned international sites like Davos.
What is the Gulmarg Convention Centre?
The Gulmarg Convention Centre was constructed at a cost of ₹21 crore by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC). Its purpose is to promote tourism, cultural exchange, and business convergence in Jammu and Kashmir.
In attendance during the inauguration were key figures including Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Gulmarg Pirzada Farooq A Shah, and Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Minga Sherpa. This gathering highlights the collaborative effort from various sectors to enhance the region’s tourism appeal.
Infrastructure to Support International Events
During the event, CM Abdullah laid the foundation stone for a new Ski Hire Shop, developed by the J&K Cable Car Corporation. This addition strengthens the existing tourism infrastructure in Gulmarg and aims to draw more tourists year-round.
Addressing the attendees, Abdullah emphasized the importance of not just building infrastructure but also ensuring its thorough use and maintenance. “The real responsibility begins with their use and maintenance,” he stated.
While the NBCC completed the project on time and within budget, Abdullah noted that the furnishing aspect was initially overlooked. “We are working to finalize the furnishing so that the Centre can be put to immediate use,” he reassured.
Positioning Gulmarg for MICE Tourism
The Chief Minister envisions the Gulmarg Convention Centre as a key player in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism sector. He stressed its potential to attract high-profile events and weddings.
“We are considering linking it with SKICC’s marketing network to promote the Centre as part of a broader package,” Abdullah revealed.
His dream is for Gulmarg to be recognized as an ‘Asian Davos,’ attracting two to three annual high-impact events. Abdullah stated, “I want it to develop on that scale, if not, at least have a good number of international participants.”
Enhancing Evening Activities for Tourists
CM Abdullah also highlighted the need for vibrant evening activities for tourists in Gulmarg, especially during the winter season. “Currently, tourists have limited options after a day filled with skiing and sightseeing,” he noted.
To address this, he proposed establishing a coffee shop, restaurant, and a digital cinema system. This would provide visitors with engaging evening experiences while simultaneously generating revenue.
The Chief Minister urged government departments to utilize the Convention Centre for meetings and training programs. This would help maximize the venue’s use until private sector interest rises.
“Departments such as education and health can hold programs here, providing a refreshing change of location to participants,” he remarked, emphasizing the balance between efficiency and atmosphere.

At the conclusion of the event, CM Abdullah congratulated both the NBCC and Gulmarg Development Authority for their efforts. “This project marks a landmark addition to Gulmarg’s tourism profile,” he expressed proudly.
