India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has urged for heightened solidarity among Global South nations and a robust commitment to multilateralism. He emphasized the need for a collective movement towards reforming the United Nations and other pivotal global institutions. These remarks were delivered at a high-level meeting of like-minded Global South countries on Tuesday.
The meeting took place in New York on the sidelines of the ongoing 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Expressing concerns about a range of global issues, Jaishankar stated, “Given the proliferation of global concerns and the complexity of risks, it is natural for the Global South to seek multilateralism for solutions.”
Jaishankar outlined a structured approach aimed at empowering the Global South to engage effectively with world affairs. He presented five key proposals designed to amplify the collective voice and influence of developing nations on the international stage.
He highlighted the importance of existing forums in enhancing consultations among Global South nations. According to Jaishankar, these partnerships can significantly solidify solidarity and foster collaboration, allowing for a united front on critical global issues.
Furthermore, he called for comprehensive reform of the UN and asserted that the framework of “multilateralism as a whole” also requires significant enhancement. This reform is essential for enabling the Global South to demonstrate its unique strengths, experiences, and achievements internationally.
Jaishankar cited various examples of these strengths, including contributions in vaccine development, digital capabilities, educational initiatives, sophisticated agro-practices, and the potential of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in shaping the future economy.
In his address, Jaishankar underscored the pressing need for an equitable approach to tackle global challenges, particularly in the realms of climate action and climate justice. He insisted that Global South nations must spearhead initiatives that prioritize their own needs rather than simply adopting perspectives from the Global North.
Moreover, he highlighted the necessity of engaging with emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence. Jaishankar warned that if left unchecked, developing countries could fall behind in the rapidly changing global landscape, stressing that proactive involvement in such discussions would be critical.
India has been tirelessly advocating for the Global South’s voice in international dialogues, consistently reaffirming its dedication to ensuring that developing nations take an active role in shaping the global agenda.
