On September 24, renowned earth scientist Prof. Harsh K. Gupta met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at the Public Outreach (Raabita) Office, focusing on earthquake resilience and disaster preparedness in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting also included the Chief Minister’s advisor, Nasir Aslam Wani, and Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice-Chancellor of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST). Together, they aimed to tackle the pressing issue of earthquake preparedness in the region.
Prof. Gupta, a former member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and former Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, emphasized the urgent need for earthquake-resilient infrastructure in J&K, which sits precariously within the vulnerable Himalayan earthquake belt.
In his compelling presentation, Prof. Gupta advocated for rigorous studies and initiatives to enhance preparedness against first-rate seismic threats. Drawing from successful models of medium-term earthquake forecasts in the northeast Himalayan region, he stressed the necessity of implementing similar research and forecasting mechanisms in Kashmir.
Proposing a multi-faceted approach, Prof. Gupta recommended the establishment of an “Earthquake Safety Day” to educate school students about earthquake safety. He highlighted the importance of simulating historical seismic events to formulate effective preparedness plans and suggested conducting mega-mock drills to enhance the region’s readiness.
Compliance with stringent earthquake-safe construction practices emerged as another vital recommendation. Prof. Gupta urged officials to deploy sophisticated Earthquake Early Warning Systems along the Himalayan belt to mitigate disaster risks effectively.
Chief Minister Abdullah acknowledged the importance of Gupta’s insights and underlined the government’s commitment to developing earthquake-resilient infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. He assured constituents that the recommendations would contribute significantly to J&K’s overall disaster preparedness and public safety strategy.
