Sep 26: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed strong disapproval on Friday regarding the recent arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, deeming it ‘unfortunate’. Abdullah accused the BJP-led NDA government of reneging on commitments made to the people of Ladakh.
“This incident is unfortunate. The way the Central government was targeting him since yesterday suggested that an arrest was imminent,” Abdullah told reporters during the inaugural ceremony of the third Junior Asian Pencak Silat championship held in Jammu.
The arrest of Sonam Wangchuk occurred two days after a wave of violent protests in Ladakh claimed four lives and injured 90 others. The exact reasons behind his arrest remain unclear, raising concerns about the ongoing political climate in the region.
The Ministry of Home Affairs implicated Wangchuk, a senior member of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), stating that he played a role in inciting the violence. The LAB, which along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), has been advocating for statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. This agitation has persisted for over five years, highlighting the region’s quest for greater autonomy and representation.
Abdullah reflected on the past, recalling promises made to the residents of Ladakh prior to the Hill council elections in 2020. He recounted an incident where a Union minister visited Leh, acknowledging the community’s previous decision to boycott the elections. “Promises were made to ensure participation in the elections. Not only did the people participate significantly, but they also propelled the BJP to victory. However, those promises remain unfulfilled,” he noted.
Addressing the broader issue of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah questioned the rationale behind the Central government’s inaction. “If the delay in restoring statehood relates to the electorate choosing not to elect the BJP into power, then clarity is essential,” he proposed. “They should officially state that statehood restoration is contingent upon the BJP forming the government in the Union Territory.”
Following a query about allegations from Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, who accused Abdullah of justifying the unrest in Ladakh, the Chief Minister emphasized that the BJP MLA frequently shifts blame onto others, suggesting a pattern of deflection.
As tensions rise in Ladakh and previous commitments remain unmet, the implications of Wangchuk’s arrest resonate deeply within the socio-political fabric of Jammu and Kashmir. The pursuit of statehood, coupled with escalating protests, reflects the pressing need for dialogue and clarity from the Central government.
