In a significant move to bolster sports initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Satish Sharma, the Minister for Youth Services and Sports, met with Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, in New Delhi on Monday. They discussed enhancing sports infrastructure and fostering youth development in the Union Territory.
During the meeting, Sharma submitted a comprehensive memorandum outlining the J&K Government’s dedication to turning the region into a vibrant sports hub. This memorandum detailed critical proposals to develop sports facilities, improve athlete welfare, and encourage grassroots participation.
Sharma’s proposals align with the National Sports Policy 2025 and the J&K Sports Policy 2022. He emphasized the need for world-class facilities, like the National Winter Sports Centre of Excellence at Gulmarg, and called for modernized district stadiums equipped with all-weather infrastructure.
Access to sports amenities for rural youth remains a priority. Sharma proposed creating sports facilities at the panchayat level to ensure equitable access for all. He also highlighted the importance of expanding the Khelo India grassroots programs, which aim at building a strong foundation for future athletes.
Financial support is crucial for athlete development. Sharma requested enhanced scholarships and financial aid to support aspiring athletes in J&K. He stressed integrating sports science and physiotherapy into training systems, which can significantly improve athlete performance.
A key focus of the discussion was fostering public-private partnerships (PPP) to manage sports infrastructure more efficiently. Such collaborations can leverage resources and expertise to drive sports development forward.
To promote sports-linked tourism and attract global attention, Sharma proposed hosting international winter sports events in Gulmarg. This initiative aims to position J&K as a premier global destination for winter and adventure sports.
Additionally, Sharma highlighted the urgency of receiving an early release of ₹103.82 crore under the Khelo India scheme. This funding is critical to completing various ongoing sports infrastructure projects.
Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya responded positively during the meeting, assuring that a dedicated policy for promoting rural sports will be established soon. He also committed to allocating funds for sports equipment to support both ongoing and upcoming sports initiatives in J&K.
The concerted efforts by Sharma and Mandaviya reflect a vision to transform J&K’s sports landscape, emphasizing youth engagement, infrastructure development, and the empowerment of local athletes.
